Just as a clarification -- this applies to the evaluation done by Occuapational and Physical Therapists, and does not apply to Evaluation and Management Codes performed by other types of providers.

Dr Westwood
This is a very good point, and I am glad you brought it up.

First, sales people dont always give correct billing and coding information, that is just not their expertise. And, they are ther trying to sell a product and are going to take no action if you have negative consequences.

Procedure code 97035 requires constant one-on-one attendance with the provider and the patient. It is not meant for any type of unattended service.

If you have any questions regarding the use of a billing code, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the MPMS team.

I was recently approached by a salesperson for a hands free ultrasound unit. He was indicating the unit would provide good time management. However upon further investigation I found 97035 code is inappropriate (contrary to what the sales rep told me)
The following is what I found with major insurance carriers

Hands-Free Ultrasound:
"hands-free" ultrasound is considered experimental and investigational.

Hands-Free Ultrasound is different than traditional ultrasound in that it doesn’t require constant attendance (direct one-on-one patient contact by the provider) to deliver the service. For this reason, you cannot bill 97035 (a constant attendance modality) for hands-free ultrasound – because constant attendance is not required. The most appropriate CPT code for this service would be 97039 (unlisted modality).

Keep this in mind if you plan on purchasing a hands-free device, or currently use one, as the savings in personnel overhead, may be negated by the fact many payers don’t reimburse unlisted codes such as 97039
